The existing small two bedroom house sat on a reasonably sized plot that allowed room to extend to the side and rear. To get a third bedroom at first floor level entailed cantilevering the extension to the side at first floor level. The master bedroom to the rear is located in an extension with a low pitched roof to reduce the scale of this structure.

At ground floor level the extension is in two parts with a main space containing the kitchen/living/dining space and a separate single storey garden room which is stepped down from the main floor level and creates a sun trap courtyard to the rear.
